| Green tea has been used for medicinal purposes for over 4000 yearin China. This evidence was mainly anecdotal but is now widely supported by scientific support from both Asia and the west. Dramatic claims which have been made about green tea have included its ability to inhibit and kill cancer cells without damaging healthy cells, reducing cholesterol and having considerable benefits for the skin.
This article outlines the most powerful effects which green tea can have upon the body. One of the most common beliefs about green tea is about its cancer fighting properties. The foundation of this theory is that green tea in particular is rich in catechin polyphenols, particularly EGCG. This is a powerful antioxidant which inhibits the growth of cancer cells and kills them without damaging healthy cell growth. Significantly lower cancer levels are reported within communities where green tea is drunk regularly. Green tea is also powerful at tackling heart disease. It has been shown to lower total cholesterol levels and improve the ratio of good to bad cholesterol. An example of this is that in Japan there is a relatively low level of heart disease, despite the fact that 75% of Japanese men smoke. Green teas potent levels of antioxidants are able to minimise the levels of free radicals found in the bloodstream, thus minimising the damage they can do to the body. Green teas health benefits are not contained to these two high risk diseases. It has also been found to be helpful in protecting against rheumatoid arthritis, infection, skin concerns and impaired immune function. In particular, it has been noted that the bacteria killing qualities of this drink are particularly good at halting tooth decay. Supermodels also swear by the drink. Not only is it frequently linked to sustained weight loss but it is also strongly recommended for many skin complaints, including acne and eczema. These can be tackled either through drinking the tea or through topical applications.
